About the Author
Erin Gibbs Van Brunschot is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Calgary, Canada. She received her BA and MA in Sociology from the University of Calgary, and her PhD from the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on the concept of risk as it primarily applies to criminal offending and victimization. Her current research projects include an examination of how past experiences with various types of hazards influence self-protective behavior and expectations for the future, and the means by which individual and institutional efforts to enhance security work together and/or at cross-purposes. She has published articles in such journals as the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, Alberta Journal of Educational Research, Women and Criminal Justice, British Journal of Criminology and has made major contributions in books such as Juvenile Delinquency by Creechan and Silverman; Crime in Canadian Society 6th edition by Silverman, Teevan, and Sacco; The Process and Structure of Crime by Meier, Kennedy, and Sacco; and the Encyclopedia of Crime and Punishment by Levinson.

Leslie W. Kennedy is currently University Professor at Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice (SCJ) and Director of the Rutgers Center on Public Security. He was the Dean of SCJ from 1998 to 2007.  In his most recent research, he has focused on crime mapping and the development of risk terrain modeling for use by police in preventing crime.  In addition to publishing numerous books on risk and crime, his research has appeared in Criminology, Justice Quarterly, American Journal of Public Health, and the Journal of Quantitative Criminology.

About the Author
Vern Bengtson is the AARP/University Chair in Gerontology and Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California. He has published 15 books and over 220 articles in gerontology, the sociology of the life course, family sociology, social psychology, and ethnicity and aging.  He was elected President of the Gerontological Society of America and has been granted a MERIT award from the National Institute on Aging for his 35-year Longitudinal Study of Generations. Bengtson’s honors include (twice) the Reuben Hill Award from the National Council of Family Relations (1980 and 1986); the Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Sociological Association’s section on aging (1995); the Robert W. Kleemeier Award from the Gerontological Society of America (1996); and the Ernest W. Burgess Award from the National Council on Family Relations (1998).  In addition he has received several awards for teaching, which has provided his greatest satisfaction throughout his career.      


Alan Acock (Ph.D., Washington State University) is Professor and former Chair of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University. He has also taught at Louisiana State University, Virginia Tech, and the University of Southern California. Alan has published 4 books, 20 book chapters, and 120 articles. He is a Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations, a winner of the Reuben Hill Award, several awards for teaching, and his book on Family Diversity and Well-Being received the 1995 Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Book. Alan has held elected offices in the American Sociological Association and the National Council on Family Relations. His substantive research has been on the effects of family structure on the well-being of family members and on intergenerational relations. He is currently investigating the effects of fathers returning to families after incarceration. He has served on editorial boards of several substantive journals including the Journal of Marriage and Family. His methodological research has focused on structural equation modeling and missing values. He is currently writing a book on Stata. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Structural Equation Modeling.


Katherine R. Allen (Ph.D., Syracuse University) is Professor of Family Studies and adjunct professor of Women's Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her primary academic interests are in family diversity over the life course, feminism and family studies, and qualitative research methods. She is also interested in feminist and anti-racist pedagogy and women's leadership in higher education. She serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Family Issues, Family Relations, Journal of Aging Studies, and Journal of GLBT Family Studies. She was co-editor of the Handbook of Family Diversity (Oxford University Press, 2000) with David Demo and Mark Fine, the co-author of Women and Families: Feminist Reconstructions with Kristine Baber (Guilford, 1992), and the author of Single Women/Family Ties: Life Histories of Older Women (Sage, 1989), has served as a contributing author in a number of Sage titles (e.g., Hendrick & Hendrick's Close Relationships: A Sourcebook, McKenry/Price's Families & Change, 3/e), and is a prolific author of journal articles.



 



Peggye Dilworth-Anderson (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is Director, Center for Aging and Diversity in the Institute on Aging at Chapel Hill and Professor of Health Policy and Administration in the School of Public Health. She earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1975 and also received training in family therapy from the Family Institute of Chicago, Institute of Psychiatry, Northwestern University. In 1989 she received additional training in family issues and Alzheimer's disease from the Harvard Geriatric Education Center. Her research and publications have included both theoretically and empirically-based topics on ethnic minority families, with emphasis on older African-Americans. In addition to being cited in professional journals, her work has been cited in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Christian Science Monitor, and numerous local and regional newspapers. She has received funding to support her research from the National Institute on Aging, the Administration on Aging, the March of Dimes Birth Defect Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association and GalxoSmithKline.  

 



David M. Klein is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. His current research is on relationship formation, assessment, and dissolution. He co-edited the Sourcebook of Family Theory and Research, and has served as Chair and Archivist of the Theory Construction and Research Methodology Workshop. He also has been Treasurer of the National Council on Family Relations, and Chair of its Research and Theory Section.  He is also an Honorary Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations.

Great book! This book is well written with numerous sources to support the multiple subject areas addressed by the book. This book easily surpasses other books that I have read on Family Relationship Theory. This is a great book to use as source material for any type of Psychology Research Paper, is well written, and very easy to read and understand.

About the Author

Robert J. Marzano is senior scholar at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Aurora, Colorado, associate professor at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and president of Marzano & Associates in Centennial, Colorado. He is the author of 25 books, 150 articles and chapters in books, and 100 sets of curriculum materials for teachers and students in Grades K–12. His works include What Works in Schools: Translating Research Into Action, School Leadership That Works, Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement, Classroom Management That Works, Classroom Instruction That Works, Classroom Assessment and Grading That Work, and A Different Kind of Classroom: Teaching With Dimensions of Learning.

During his 35 years in public education, Marzano has worked in every state multiple times as well as in a host of countries in Europe and Asia. The central theme in his work has been translating research and theory into practical programs and tools for K–12 teachers and administrators.



John S. Kendall is a senior director in research at McREL, where he directs a technical assistance unit that develops and provides standards-related services for schools, districts, states, and other organizations.

An internationally recognized expert in the development and improvement of standards for education, Kendall has consulted for more than 50 school districts and 14 state departments of education as well as education agencies in the U.S. territories and abroad. He has authored or coauthored six books and more than 30 monographs, technical studies, and articles published by American School Board Journal, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and National Association of School Boards, among others. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Kendall’s current research and technical assistance efforts include working with clients to establish performance standards for the classroom, developing standards for principals, and identifying the knowledge and skills that help students learn.

A Taxing Taxonomy

If you like to put a very fine point on learning taxonomies then this book is for YOU. People who are familiar with Bloom's taxonomy will get the most out of this book. There are some improvements over Bloom's that make it worth the read.

The flow of the book is logical but dry. I found it just too academic for my taste: there are so many parameters to consider that taking the book at face value would be impractical. However, one can glean some thoughful points that are useful and worthy of application.

About the Author

Jason W. Osborne is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.  He is also Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Public Health Science.  He teaches and publishes on "best practices" in quantitative and applied research methods. He has served as evaluator or consultant on projects in public education (K-12), instructional technology, higher education, nursing and health care, medicine and medical training, epidemiology, business and marketing, and jury selection in death penalty cases. He served as founding editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement and has been on the editorial boards of several other journals (such as Practical Assessment, Research, and Evaluation). Jason also publishes on identification with academics (how a student's self-concept impacts motivation to succeed in academics) and on issues related to social justice and diversity (such as Stereotype Threat). A Must Have Resource for Statisticians

I bought this book for some research I was doing for my thesis, and when I started reading the book I was amazed at how many different practical issues are addressed. This has become by far my favorite statistical book and is easy to understand for statistical graduate students. I plan on using this book as a resource throughout my career as a data analyst.

About the Author
Robert F. Belli is Professor of Psychology and Graduate Chair of the Survey Research and Methodology Program at the University of Nebraska―Lincoln, and Adjunct Research Associate Professor of the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan. He is also North American Editor of Applied Cognitive Psychology. His most recent interests include the application of principles from cognitive psychology--especially autobiographical memory and conversational processes--to reduce response errors in retrospective survey reports.

Frank P. Stafford is Professor of Economics, Co-Director of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and Associate Director of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan. His active research areas include issues of time allocation, the economics of childcare, and cross-national comparative studies on the role of information technology. Other research interests include family decisions about wealth, pensions and savings as they relate to individual mental and physical health through time.

Duane F. Alwin is Tracy Winfree and Ted H. McCourtney Professor in Sociology, Demography, and Human Development at Pennsylvania State University, where he is affiliated with the Population Research Institute, the Survey Research Center, and the Gerontology Center. Prior to moving to Penn State, Alwin held an appointment for 23 years in the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. The focus of his research and teaching includes survey methodology, families and children, socio-economic inequalities and health disparities, aging and the life course, and the linkages between processes of individual development, history and social change.

About the Author

George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has also been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence Award. He was awarded the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association, an honorary doctorate from LaTrobe University in Australia, and the Robin Williams Lectureship from the Eastern Sociological Society. His best-known work, The McDonaldization of Society (8th ed.), has been read by hundreds of thousands of students over two decades and translated into over a dozen languages. Ritzer is also the editor of McDonaldization: The Reader; and author of other works of critical sociology related to the McDonaldization thesis, including Enchanting a Disenchanted World, The Globalization of Nothing, Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society, as well as a series best-selling social theory textbooks and Globalization: A Basic Text. He is the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2 vols.), the Encyclopedia of Sociology (11 vols.; 2nd edition forthcoming), the Encyclopedia of Globalization (5 vols.), and is Founding Editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. In 2016 he will publish the second edition of Essentials of Sociology with SAGE.

Ritzer's Best, by far

This is a thoughtful, rich, critical, engaging analysis. I was pleasantly surprised. I had major problems with his famous McDonalization of Society -- I thought it was pretty thin, extremely redundant, and gave short-shrift to the profit motive. Furthermore, Ritzer kept re-packing the same ideas in various publications. I was jealous of all the money he was making, but not impressed in terms of scholarly innovation. When I saw this book, I thought: oh, no, here we go again: slick title, slick cover....another money maker for Ritzer and shallow analysis for us. WRONG. Even picking this book up with enormous skepticism, I was totally engaged. This is great stuff. He not only explains his observations carefully, but his analysis of WHY the trend under scrunity is happening is solid. And he gives credit where credit is due -- to Marx, in this case. Good for Ritzer.
Ritzer's argument is that products, places, and services that are locally constructed, locally controlled, and full of distinct and special qualities are vanishing. What are proliferating and ever-increasing are products, places, and services that are centrally constructed, centrally controlled, and lacking distinct or special qualities. But he goes beyond this observation and really tries to EXAPLIN it. His critiques of the profit-motive are strong and right on the mark. Sure, there were many things I disagreed with in this book, and things I would take exception to. But ultimately this was solid scholarship, piercing and profound social theory, and a great leap forward for one of sociology's most productive scholars.

Claiming that societies worldwide are moving away from "something" (defined as unique and distinctive indigenous social forms), toward the "nothing" (globalized products that are centrally controlled and blandly the same worldwide), The Globalization Of Nothing warns that societies all over the world today are rapidly losing unique customs, local businesses, gathering places, even the hallmark of personal interaction. The Globalization Of Nothing is a philosophical and clarion warning regarding the creeping and homogenizing impersonality of severe economic forces.

An essay expanded into a text

Read the introduction, read the appendix, and you have it. The rest is filler. Ritzer's style is readable, but the over-elucidation of uncomplicated ideas, whose evidence itself is largely subjective (how, after all, can one define "magical," or "enchanted" places for any audience that numbers more than one?) makes one question the value of this book.

About the Author
Katherine Ryan (B.S., Psychology, M.Ed., Special Education, Ph.D., Educational Psychology, University of Illinois - Urbana) is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at UIUC. Her areas of specialization include Educational Measurement, Program Evaluation, and Applied Statistics, and she is currently Head of Measurement and Evaluation in the College of Education. Her research interests include assessment validation issues, particularly the evaluation of validity evidence based on response processes and consequences of assessments. Other interests include differential item/test functioning, and issues in program evaluation theory and practice. She teaches Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, Classroom Assessment, Introduction to Measurement, Introduction to Program Evaluation Theory, and Introduction to Evaluation Methods. She has edited two volumes of New Directions in Evaluation for the American Evaluation Association (AEA), one on evaluation as a democratic process, and the other on teaching evaluation in higher education.

J. Bradley Cousins is professor of Evaluation at the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa. Cousins’ main interests are in program evaluation including participatory and collaborative approaches, use, and capacity building. He received his PhD in Educational Measurement and Evaluation from the University of Toronto in 1988. Throughout his career he has received several awards for his work in evaluation including the Contribution to Evaluation in Canada award (CES, 1999), the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award for Theory in Evaluation (AEA, 2008) and the AERA Research on Evaluation Distinguished Scholar Award (2011). He has published many articles and books on evaluation and was editor of the Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation from 2002 to 2010. Throughout his career, Cousins has had considerable experience planning, delivering, and evaluating evaluation training and capacity building in Canada and abroad. Internationally he led evaluation capacity building in Central and West Africa and a major three and one-half year project in India. He is currently leading a nation-wide evaluation of teacher in-service training in that country in collaboration with several of the people he had previously trained. Cousins completed a three and one-half year term as director of the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services at the University of Ottawa in July 2015. About the Author

Dr. Melissa Stormont has been involved in special education and psychology for over 15 years. Dr. Stormont has worked to support children with behavioral problems as a teacher, behavioral consultant, and through teaching teachers and conducting research in higher education. Currently, Dr. Stormont is an Associate Professor in Special Education at the University of Missouri. Dr. Stormont has published extensive research related to the educational and social needs of young children who are vulnerable for failure including children with behavior problems, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and children who have limited resources due to poverty. Dr. Stormont’s research has included a focus on family and school factors that contribute to risk and resiliency. She has published over 30 articles and book chapters in these areas.



Dr. Timothy J. Lewis has been involved in special education for over 20 years. Dr. Lewis has taught students with emotional and behavioral disorders in high school, elementary, and self-contained psychiatric settings. At present, Dr. Lewis is Professor and Associate Dean for Research, Development, and Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri. Dr. Lewis has been involved with developing school-wide systems of behavioral support for over 15 years. He has worked directly with school teams around the world, secured several federal grants to support his research and demonstration efforts, and is a frequent contributor to the professional literature examining various aspects of Positive Behavior Support. His specialty areas include social skill instruction, functional assessment, and proactive school-wide discipline systems.



Rebecca S. Beckner is an early childhood behavior consultant with the public schools in Columbia, Missouri. She has been a family and individual counselor and owned a childcare center for ten years, specializing in the care of children with behavioral concerns. Becky currently participates in the evaluation of young children in the area of social/emotional/behavioral functioning and serves children with severe behavior problems and their families. She also facilitates several local Program-wide Positive Behavior Support teams in the public schools, Head Start, and community day cares. Becky has twenty years of experience consulting with teachers on behavior management and providing workshop and in-service training to teaching staff and parents on subjects such as Positive Behavior Supports, social skills, strategies for supporting children with significant behavioral difficulties, resiliency, and communicating with parents. Becky is a certified trainer of Program-wide Positive Behavior Support and has traveled throughout the country supporting teams as they implement the approach. She is also working on her dissertation at the University of Missouri (Special Education-Behavior Disorders) on implementing the PBS approach to improve at-risk behavior of preschool children, and is teaching courses on early childhood assessment and working with families.



Nanci Johnson is currently a Positive Behavior Support Facilitator for the Columbia Public Schools. She previously worked as part of the Missouri Positive Behavior Support initiative, collaborating to develop state training materials, conducting school based research and providing

consultation both in and out of the state. Nanci has taught parenting education, pre-school, kindergarten, first grade, as well as college level coursework. She has special interest in systems based school change, development of communities of practice to support effective instructional practices, and instructional leadership.
